INFORMATION NOTICE 99-01

TO: All Authorized Users of Radioactive Materials

FROM: Assistant Director for Environmental Management and the Radiation Safety Officer

SUBJECT: Proper Segregation and Labeling of Radioactive Waste Containers

The purpose of this Information Notice is to establish standards and provide instructions for the proper segregation and labeling of radioactive waste containers. All Authorized Users/Generators of radioactive waste must satisfy these requirements when generating of radioactive waste.

Waste Segregation

All radioactive waste should be segregated according to isotope (except 14C and 3H) and waste form (i.e. dry solid waste, sharps, organic scintillation fluid and its associated liquid scintillation vials, biodegradable scintillation vials and it associated liquid scintillation vials, aqueous solutions, organic solutions, and animal/pathological waste) into radioactive waste containers provided and/or approved by EHS.

"Caution - Radioactive Material" Labels

Each waste container should be accompanied by a "Caution - Radioactive Material" label. This label should be used to annotate the isotope, total activity in the container and the date of the last addition to the container or the assay date once the container is full. In addition, liquid or scintillation vial waste containers must have the identity and concentration of the solvents that the nuclides are in. NOTE: The label should not be used as a log sheet to annotate multiple additions of waste to the container.

Radioactive Waste Disposal Log Sheet

Each waste container should be accompanied by a "Radioactive Waste Disposal Log Sheet". The log sheet is a tool for the Authorized User to keep track of a cumulative, running total of the activity in the container while the container is being filled. An entry on the Radioactive Waste Disposal Log Sheet noting the isotope, activity, and date should be annotated each and every time radioactive waste is placed into any container.

The Radioactive Waste Disposal Log Sheet must be physically attached to the waste container in order to satisfy the regulatory requirement for labeling the container. If the log sheet is not physically attached to the waste container, annotate the isotope, the maximum activity that will be in the container when it is full and the date on the "Caution - Radioactive Material" label attached to the container, use the Radioactive Waste Disposal Log Sheet to keep track of the actual activity, and transfer the actual activity and date onto the Caution - Radioactive Material" label when the radioactive waste container is full.
