Volunteers and Insurance
The University of Maryland, Baltimore does not provide insurance for personal injury, property damage, or the theft or destruction of property, to protect volunteers from financial losses that may result from their experiences at UMB. The University does not reimburse volunteers for their expenses related to personal injury or property loss, damage, or theft. Volunteers are expected to execute a document indicating assumption of risks in connections with volunteering. Forms are linked below.
Volunteers are strongly encouraged to maintain personal health insurance, and to carry insurance information with them to avoid delays in securing medical treatment if there is an injury while volunteering.
If a volunteer is injured, or suffers loss or damage of property, while volunteering, and the matter results from negligence of a State employee working at the University, the volunteer may file a claim for damages with the State Treasurer’s Office, relying on the Maryland State Tort Claims Act.
The University Office of Environmental Health and Safety should be notified immediately of any volunteer injury requiring treatment beyond minor first aid.
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety can provide information about the Tort Claims Act to volunteers upon request.
