REGULAR BUSINESS HOURS
INSTRUCTIONS FOR BITES/SCRATCH/SPLASH EXPOSURE INCIDENTS INVOLVING MACAQUE MONKEYS
Prevention of B Virus (Cercopithecine herpesvirus 1) Infection
- Immediately call for assistance if someone is nearby or available.
- FOR BITES OR SCRATCHES; IMMEDIATELY SCRUB WITH SOAP; RINSE WITH WATER; REPEAT SCRUBBING AND RINSING FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES.
Note: If there is excessive bleeding, apply direct pressure to control blood loss first while summoning assistance. If there is no assistance readily available, call the UMB Police on 711.
- FOR SPLASHES TO THE EYES, NOSE, OR MOUTH, flush with flowing water (eye wash station is preferable) for a minimum of 15 minutes.
- After cleaning the wound or flushing the site as directed:
- Contact your supervisor and complete the First Report of Injury form and fax a copy to UMB Risk Management at 6-1520 or go to our online form to ensure that the claim is processed.
SEEKING MEDICAL TREATMENT:
- The employee's supervisor should then page Ms. Denise Mitchell of SEH at (410) 416-1329. If the supervisor is unavailable, the employee may call.
- If there is NO response within 5 minutes:
- Page Ms. Michelle Johnson at (410) 512-0021.
- If Ms. Johnson is not available, call the clinic Director, Dr. Kevin Ferentz, at (410) 328-8792 or page him at (410) 416-1854
- If no response, report to Student and Employee Health Center.
- Arrange for an appointment to be seen at SEH. Be sure to take along the completed “Employee’s First Report of Injury”
STUDENT AND EMPLOYEE HEALTH (SEH):
- Location: 29 S. Paca St., between Redwood and Lombard streets.
- Hours: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Thursday; and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Closed weekends and nights.
- IF SEH IS CLOSED : Seek appropriate medical care at family physician or hospital - bring your Alert Card to the nearest emergency department and follow the steps outlined above.
