AFTER REGULAR HOURS
INSTRUCTIONS FOR BITES/SCRATCH/SPLASH EXPOSURE INCIDENTS INVOLVING MACAQUE MONKEYS
Prevention of B Virus (Cercopithecine herpes virus 1) Infection
- Immediately call for assistance if someone is nearby or available.
- Contact Veterinary Resources to advise them of the incident including source and location information. Call (410) 706-3540. If no answer, page (410) 748-4569.
- FOR BITES OR SCRATCHES; IMMEDIATELY SCRUB WITH SOAP; RINSE WITH WATER; REPEAT SCRUBBING AND RINSING FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES. Note: If there is excessive bleeding, apply direct pressure to control blood loss first while summoning assistance. If there is assistance readily available, call the UMB Police on 711.
- FOR SPLASHES TO THE EYES, NOSE, OR MOUTH, flush with flowing water (eye wash station is preferable) for a minimum of 15 minutes.
- After cleaning the wound or flushing the site as directed:
- After hours (weekends and before 9am or after 4pm weekdays) should call the answering service for the Department of Family Medicine at (410) 328-8792 and request to speak with the Faculty member on-call.
- The on-call faculty member will obtain the necessary information from the UMB employee and communicate this information to the Attending physician in the Emergency Department by calling (410) 328-9595.
- The UMB employee will then proceed to the UMMS Emergency Department (entrance off of Lombard Street at Penn Street) where they should identify themselves as a UMB employee with a potential B virus exposure, show their “ Macaque Medical Alert Card” (SEE SAMPLE), and ask to be evaluated by the Emergency Department staff.

- The Emergency Department staff will write a prescription for a three day supply of valacyclovir (Valtrex) as described below.
Prescription Dispensing:
During business hours of the University Outpatient Pharmacy (Monday to Friday 7am – 6:30pm and Saturday and Sunday 9am to 4pm), the employee will pick-up their prescription at this location (located on the first floor of the Weinberg Building adjacent to the Gudelsky Tower- across from chapel and next to
fountain ).
If the Outpatient Pharmacy is closed, the Emergency Department staff will fax the prescription to the Inpatient Pharmacy for dispensing and delivery to the ER where the staff will issue it to employee.
Mandatory Follow-Up: It is extremely important that the UMB employee report to the Family Medicine Office- Student and Employee Health (29 S. Paca Street) on the next business day for completion of the medical record and the prescription of the remaining eleven days of prophylaxis ( cost to be covered by workers compensation
- Employee or supervisor must complete the Employee’s First Report of Injury” and the "Supervisor’s Report" and fax them to UMB Risk Management at 6-1520 or go to our online forms to ensure that the claim gets processed.
