INSTRUCTIONS FOR BITE/SCRATCH/SPLASH EXPOSURE INCIDENTS INVOLVING ANIMALS (NON-MONKEY)
If an exposure (injection, absorption, or inhalation) of non-monkey animal tissues or fluids, or from cages that might be contaminated with macaque secretions,
DO THE FOLLOWING:
- FOR BITES OR SCRATCHES; IMMEDIATELY SCRUB AND IRRIGATE THE WOUND WITH SOAP AND WATER FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES.
- FOR SPLASHES TO THE EYES, NOSE, OR MOUTH; IRRIGATE THE SITE IMMEDIATELY WITH RAPIDLY FLOWING WATER FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES.
- AFTER CLEANING THE WOUND AS DIRECTED, Contact your supervisor and complete the "Employee’s First Report of Injury"
form and fax a copy to UMB Risk Management at 6-1520 or go to our online form to ensure that the claim is processed.
- The employee's supervisor should then page the SEH at (410) 512-0021.If the supervisor is unavailable, the employee may call.
- Advise them that you have a UMB employee with an animal (non-monkey) blood-borne pathogen exposure. Be sure to take along the completed “Employee’s First Report of Injury form.”
If there is NO response within 10 minutes:
- Beep Ms. Harriet Mandell at (410) 416-6894.
- If Ms. Mandell is not available, call the clinic Director, Dr. Kevin Ferentz, at (410) 328-2686 or page him at (410) 416-1854
STUDENT AND EMPLOYEE HEALTH (SEH) is located at 29 S. Paca St., between Redwood and Lombard streets.
Hours 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday; and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Friday.
IF AFTER NORMAL HOURS:
- Go to the UMMS Emergency Room and advise them that you are a University employee with an animal (non-monkey) blood-borne pathogen exposure. Specify the nature of the research work you are doing. If the attending physician needs to contact Veterinary Resources have them call (410) 706-3540..If no answer, page (410) 748-4569.
NOTE: Contact or have co-worker contact Veterinary Resources if an animal was injured or left out of cage, Be sure to provide information as to type of animal, building and room location.
