INSTRUCTIONS FOR BITES/SCRATCH/SPLASH EXPOSURE INCIDENTS INVOLVING MACAQUE MONKEYS
Prevention of B Virus (Cercopithecine herpesvirus 1) Infection
- Immediately call for assistance if someone is nearby or available.
- FOR BITES OR SCRATCHES; IMMEDIATELY SCRUB WITH SOAP; RINSE WITH WATER; REPEAT SCRUBBING AND RINSING FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES.
Note: If there is excessive bleeding, apply direct pressure to control blood loss first while summoning assistance. If there is no assistance readily available, call the UMB Police on 711.
- FOR SPLASHES TO THE EYES, NOSE, OR MOUTH, flush with flowing water (eye wash station is preferable) for a minimum of 15 minutes.
- After cleaning the wound or flushing the site as directed:
- Contact your supervisor and complete the First Report of Injury Form form and fax a copy to UMB Risk Management at 6-1520 or go to our online form to ensure that the claim is processed. Then contact Student and Employee Health (SEH) by paging (410) 512-0021 IF NO ANSWER after 5 MINUTES : Beep Ms. Harriet Mandell at (410) 416-6894. IF NO ANSWER after 5 MINUTES : call the clinic Director, Dr. Kevin Ferentz, at (410) 328-2686 or page him at (410) 416-1854. If no answer, report to Student and Employee Health at 29 S. Paca Street. SEH Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday; and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Friday.
Advise them that you have a UMB employee with an animal (non-monkey) blood-borne pathogen exposure. Be sure to take along the completed Employee’s First Report of Injury form.
- Employee or supervisor must complete the Employees First Report of Injury” and the "Supervisor’s Report" and fax them to UMB Risk Management at 6-1520 or go to our online forms to ensure that the claim gets processed.
If off campus, bring your Alert Card to the nearest emergency department and follow the steps outlined above. |
