Lockout/Tagout
Many
accidents have been caused by the uncontrolled release of
hazardous energy. Most of these accidents could have been
prevented by proper lockout/Tagout procedures. OSHA's
lockout/Tagout Standard is designed to prevent needless
deaths and serious injuries to service and maintenance workers
by controlling hazardous energy.
This standard requires that the following steps
be taken to protect employees from the release of hazardous
energy.
-
Written procedures be established for
the lockout/Tagout of each piece of equipment.
-
Employees are training on the importance
and methods of lockout/Tagout procedures.
-
The program is audited on a periodic
basis.
For assistance with developing a lockout/Tagout
program for your department, The Occupational Safety and
Health division should be contacted at 410.706.3490.
