Asbestos
Asbestos is the name given to naturally occurring
group of minerals composed of tiny, easily inhaled fibers. These
tiny fibers are flexible, fire-resistant, and virtually indestructible-qualities
that have made asbestos very useful commercially.
In most products, asbestos is combined with binding material,
so that it is not readily released into the air. However, if
it should become airborne, and if it is inhaled, it can remain
in the lungs for a long period of time, possibly causing severe
health problems that do not appear until years later.
To protect employees, students and visitors the University has
implemented a program that consists of the following:
In addition, asbestos at the University of Maryland Baltimore
is regulated by Executive Order 01.01.1987.22 (pdf
format).
