Dangers of Over-Sized Light Bulbs

Using over-sized light bulbs in lamps, appliances and fixtures can create a serious fire hazard. Most light sockets have the maximum bulb size in Watts stenciled next to the socket. This is the maximum safe wattage that can be used. Larger bulbs can create more heat than the socket is designed for, overheat, and start a fire.

Recently, several odor complaints in University of Maryland Buildings have been traced to light bulbs overheating. In one case a 150 watt light bulb had been placed in a lamp that was designed for 60 watts as a maximum. This situation was discovered before a fire could occur.

Please check your light bulbs and make sure you are using the appropriate size!
