Hot Work Permit Fire Watch Procedures

The Fire Watch Shall:

Have authority to stop the Hot Work operation if unsafe      conditions develop.

Be trained in the use of extinguishing equipment, annually.

Ensure that extinguishing equipment is readily available and in good working order.  Contractors shall provide their own extinguishing equipment.

·Maintain the Fire Watch for at least one half hour after Hot Work is complete.

Watch for fire in exposed area(s).

Be familiar with the facilities and procedures for sounding an alarm in the event of a fire.

Try to extinguish fires only within the equipment and their capabilities.  When in doubt DO NOT try to extinguish the fire.  Sound the alarm immediately to notify Emergency Services.

Be aware of the inherent hazards of the work site land of the Hot Work.

Ensure that safe conditions are maintained during the Hot Work operation.

If a fire is discovered:

Activate the building fire alarm system.

Call 711 on a University Phone or 410-706-6882 on Cell or outside phones, and report the location of the fire.

If the building fire alarm system is out of service, ask the University Police to activate the Emergency Fire Warden Notification System for evacuation of the building.

Notify other occupants on the floor of the fire.

Do not attempt to fight the fire unless you have been trained on the use of portable fire extinguishers and the fire alarm has been activated.
