HOT WORK PERMITS--BURNING, WELDING & PIPE SWEATING

Most welding, cutting and pipe sweating processes--for construction and demolition--use portable, manually operated equipment. Welding & cutting and pipe sweating (soldering) of copper pipe produce fumes that are potentially harmful to humans. In addition, these operations are a potential fire hazard.

Environmental Health and Safety utilizes a HOT WORK PERMIT program aimed at outside contractors. These procedures, which are maintained by the University Fire Marshal, consist of a Hot Work Permit issued to all contractors who have a need for this type of work on the University campus. The Hot Work Permits are issued to each contractor for a defined period of time as needed by the contractor. Periodic inspections of the work site are conducted by University Fire Marshal.  For questions regarding Hot Work Premits contact Robert Burke, University Fire Marshal at 6-3494.
