Fire Alarm Testing

Fire alarm tests are scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance, with notices sent to key occupants in those buildings. These persons are responsible for informing the rest of the building occupants of the date and time of the test, and that it is not necessary to evacuate.  On the day of the testing notices will be posted in the building lobby advising of the tests.  If the building has a voice fire alarm system, an announcement will be made prior to the start of the testing.

On a regularly scheduled basis, the University Electronics Shop, Plumbing Ship, and Maintenance Shop checks and tests fire alarm systems, smoke detectors, fire pumps, sprinkler systems, and fire extinguishers. In accordance with State Law, fire alarms are tested at least once a year to make sure they are working properly in case of a real fire. No one is required to evacuate a building during a fire alarm test.

During a fire alarm test, all horns and/or speakers are sounded first to make sure they are operating properly. This takes approximately three to five minutes. Then the audible alarms are silenced and the rest of the system is tested. If a fire alarm device does not work, it will be repaired by the University Electronics Shop. If you notice that a nearby horn or speaker made no sound, bring it to the attention of electronics shop personnel conducting the test.

University Apartments are equipped with smoke alarms that residents are encouraged to test monthly to ensure they are in proper working order. Repair is handled through Auxiliary Services.

Fire drills are conducted quarterly to further ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff occupying university buildings.
