North Building
The School of Nursing North building
was constructed in 1970 and is a five storied with a
basement of fire resistive construction. It was
designed and constructed so that three (3) additional
floors may be added. The facility contains offices
and classrooms. There are two fire rated enclosed
stairways located at the East and West portions of the
structure.
An interior fire alarm system
consisting of manual pull stations, smoke detectors,
heat detectors (supervisory), duct detectors
(supervisory), water flow devices and audible/visual
devices has been installed which transmits a signal
to the Pine Street Police Station. The fire
alarm is part of the East building fire alarm system.
The entire building is sprinkled with a wet system
and water flow and valve supervisory switches
interconnected with the fire alarm system. A 750 gpm fire pump is
located in the basement which supplies the North
building sprinkler systems and standpipe connections.
Two enclosed fire rated stairwells are located in the
building, one on the east end and one on the west end.
There are 2 1/2 reduced to 1 1/2 inch fire department
hose connections in both stairwells. The fire
department connection is located on Lombard Street.
Knox FDC caps have been installed on the fire department
connection to prevent vandalism.
Fire department suppression equipment has access on
the north and west sides of the structure.
Emergency lighting is provided by an emergency generator
located in the Penthouse.
This building is classified as a Business Occupancy.

East Building
The School of Nursing East Building
is a seven storied high-rise structure of fire resistive
construction. A below grade ice storage tank area,
part of the building cooling system, has been installed
beneath the plaza area. There are two fire rated
enclosed stairways located in the south-west and northeast
portions of the structure. Both of these stairways terminate
at the Public Way. Both
stairways are pressurized upon activation of the fire
alarm system.
The entire East and West buildings are protected by a
wet pipe sprinkler system with controls located in the
mechanical room of the East building. Main sprinkler
valves for each floor are located in the West stairwell
of the East building. Fire department 2 1/2 inch
hose valve connections are located in each stairway landing
and in the center of the main corridor on each floor
of the East building. A double 2 1/2 inch roof
hydrant has been installed. A 750 gpm fire pump
and jockey pump have been installed in the lower level
mechanical room. A fire department Siamese connection
has been located on the south side of the West
Building on
Penn Street. Knox FDC caps have been installed on
the fire department connection to prevent vandalism. Each floor is a separate fire zone with
a sprinkler shutoff valve, water flow device, inspectors
test and valve supervisory devices all of which are
interconnected into the buildings fire alarm system.
The building interior fire alarm system is a "voice/audible
alarm signaling system" which serves both the East
and West buildings. An audible pre-recorded tape
voice message is transmitted via loudspeakers through-out
the facility. Visual alarm devices have been installed
in corridors, classrooms, the auditorium and other appropriate
locations. The fire alarm system consists of manual
pull stations, smoke, heat (supervisory), and duct detectors
(supervisory) and sprinkler
water flow devices. The fire alarm system transmits
a signal to the Pine Street Police Station.
There is a Fire Command Center (FCC) located to the
left of the elevator lobby. The following fire
alarm and fire department features have been provided
for the East and West buildings:
- Telephone jacks within each stairway
landing and each elevator lobby.
- Telephone handsets
located in the Fire Command Center.
- Building intercom via the voice
evacuation alarm system located in the Fire Command
Center.
- A dedicated outside telephone line
not within the UMB system in the Fire command
Center.
- Main fire alarm
panel.
- Annunciation indicating the location
and status of elevators in the Fire Command Center.
- Fire protection systems status
annunciation display in the Fire Command Center.
- Status of stairway pressurization
annunciation display in the Fire Command Center.
- Status of emergency generator annunciation
display in the Fire Command Center.
- Smoke evacuation controls.
- Building plans.
The first floor contains a Class B Place of Assembly
500 seat auditorium. Also located on the first
floor are two lecture conference rooms, a lounge, guard desk, and associated offices. Floors
two through six contain offices, classrooms, specialty
teaching/learning labs and other support spaces. The
seventh floor houses a research laboratory which contains
offices, fume hoods, glass wash room, flammable liquid
storage room and other support spaces.
A mechanical equipment penthouse is located at the roof
level.
Fire department suppression equipment has access to the
structure on the north and west sides from Baltimore
City rights-of way on Lombard and Penn Streets. A driveway is located on the south
side between the east building and the Pratt Street
Garage which may be utilized by the fire department
if necessary.
This facility is classified as Place of Assembly, Business
and Industrial occupancy.
West Building
The School of Nursing West building
is a two storied clinic structure of fire
resistive construction. It is completely sprinkled
by a wet pipe sprinkler system and has an automatic
fire alarm system as described in the detail of
the East building. There are NO fire
department hose valves in the West building. Hose
lines will have to be brought in from the outside
of the building or the West stairwell of the East
building. The two storied clinical area may
evacuate either via a west exit on each floor or
horizontally into the main portions of the East
and North buildings at the second floor level or
directly to the outside at the East end of the first
floor.
Fire department suppression equipment
has access on the south and west sides of the structure. The
fire department siamese connection for the East

Portable fire extinguisher's are located
throughout the three buildings.
A Knox Box has been installed in
the fire command center with keys for elevators, mechanical areas,
electric areas and fire alarm panels in all three
buildings to be used by the
fire department as needed. A key for the Knox FDC
caps is also located in the Knox Box. |
