Pharmacy Hall

20 North Pine Street
(Constructed 1982)
104,112 Square Feet

Fire Box 13-2

Built in 1981-82, Pharmacy Hall is a seven-storied high-rise building of fire resistive construction housing offices, laboratories, classrooms, two Class "C" Places of Assembly, with mechanical equipment rooms on the first floor and roof penthouse. Room 175 in the southwest corner, first floor is used for the storage of flammable\combustible chemicals. This room is separated from the balance of the facility by a two hour masonry separation. The space has mechanical and natural exhausting to the outside. Laboratories 453, 449, 445 contain approved flammable liquid storage cabinets vented to the outside. Rooms 603 through 679 have been renovated and are used as a pharmaceutical manufacturing suite.

The building is totally sprinkled with water flow alarms and valve supervisory switches interconnected to the facilities fire alarm system. Inspector's tests and sprinkler zone control valves are located at each floor level in the centrally located mechanical shaft.  Fire department hose valves are located in each of the three stairwells.  The fire department connection is located on the loading dock on Baltimore Street.  Knox FDC caps have been installed on the fire department connection to prevent vandalism.

Portable fire extinguisher's are located throughout the facility.

Pharmacy Hall is equipped with an interior fire alarm system consisting of manual pull stations, smoke detectors, heat detectors, duct detectors and audible/visible devices which transmits a signal to the Pine Street Police Station. Several duct smoke detectors are located on the seventh floor.

The corridors are separated by smoke barrier doors held open with electro-magnetic hold open devices which release when the fire alarm system is activated. The North-West exit door off of the 2nd floor exits onto the roof with a marked pathway to the Southwest stairwell. Both the roof exit and stair well doors open upon activation of the building fire alarm system.

A diesel powered electric emergency generator housed in the electrical sub-station supplies emergency power to exit lights, selected corridor lighting, fire alarm system, fire pump, stairway lights, selected lights in the two Places of Assembly, two elevators and emergency electrical outlets in laboratories.

Fire department suppression equipment has access to all four sides of the structure.

A Knox Box has been installed in the fire command center with keys for elevators, mechanical areas, electric areas and fire alarm panels to be used by the fire department as needed.  A key for the Knox FDC caps is also located in the Knox Box.

This building is classified as a Place of Assembly, Business, and Industrial occupancy.
