Built in 1981-82,
Pharmacy Hall is a seven-storied high-rise building
of fire resistive construction housing offices, laboratories,
classrooms, two Class "C" Places of Assembly,
with mechanical equipment rooms on the first floor and
roof penthouse. Room 175 in the southwest corner, first
floor is used for the storage of flammable\combustible
chemicals. This room is separated from the balance of
the facility by a two hour masonry separation. The space
has mechanical and natural exhausting to the outside.
Laboratories 453, 449, 445 contain approved flammable
liquid storage cabinets vented to the outside. Rooms
603 through 679 have been renovated and are used as
a pharmaceutical manufacturing
suite.
The building is totally sprinkled with water flow alarms
and valve supervisory switches interconnected to the
facilities fire alarm system. Inspector's tests and
sprinkler zone control valves are located at each floor
level in the centrally located mechanical shaft.
Fire department hose valves are located in each of the
three stairwells. The fire department connection
is located on the loading dock on Baltimore Street.
Knox FDC caps have been installed on the fire department
connection to prevent vandalism.
Portable fire extinguisher's are located
throughout the facility.
Pharmacy Hall is equipped with an interior fire alarm
system consisting of manual pull stations, smoke detectors,
heat detectors, duct detectors and audible/visible
devices which transmits a signal to the Pine Street
Police Station. Several duct smoke detectors are located
on the seventh floor.
The corridors are separated by smoke barrier doors
held open with electro-magnetic hold open devices which
release when the fire alarm system is activated. The
North-West exit door off of the 2nd floor exits onto the
roof with a marked pathway to the Southwest stairwell.
Both the roof exit and stair well doors open upon
activation of the building fire alarm system.
A diesel powered electric emergency generator housed
in the electrical sub-station supplies emergency power
to exit lights, selected corridor lighting, fire alarm
system, fire pump, stairway lights, selected lights
in the two Places of Assembly, two elevators and emergency
electrical outlets in laboratories.
Fire department suppression equipment has access to
all four sides of the structure.
A Knox Box has been installed in
the fire command center with keys for elevators, mechanical areas,
electric areas and fire alarm panels to be used by the
fire department as needed.
A key for the Knox FDC caps is
also located in the Knox Box.
This building is classified as a Place of Assembly, Business,
and Industrial occupancy.
