Mulch Fire Standard Operating Procedure
Mulch fires on the University of Maryland
Baltimore campus are generally a nuisance type
of fire that pose little if any threat to University
buildings,
staff, faculty, students or visitors. Most fires
occur during normal business hours. The Department
of Environmental Health and Safety will cooperate with
Facilities Management, and the university
Landscape contractor to respond
to mulch fires on campus. The following
procedures will apply to reports of fires on
University of Maryland
Baltimore property:
If a mulch fire is reported to University
Police, they will:
- If appropriate, send officers to
secure the area
- Contact work control (6-7570) (Work
Control will contact
the landscape crew)
- Report location
- Contact EHS (6-3490)
If mulch fire is reported to Work Control,
they will:
- Contact University Policy (711) or
(6-6882)
- Contact the Landscape crew
- Contact EHS (6-3490)
Responsibilities:
- Landscape Crew
- Assemble pre-designated personnel
and equipment
- Respond to location of reported
mulch fire
- Extinguish fire
- EHS
- Respond to location of reported
mulch fire
- Supervise and assist in extinguishing
fire
- Determine when fire is extinguished
and release landscape personnel.
