The
Health Sciences Facility is a six storied protected
steel construction building with a block/brick
veneer exterior. The facility which sits on two sites spans
W. Redwood Street. The north site has a basement housing
mechanical, electrical high voltage switchgear and
paralleling equipment. The north site is connected to the
Medical School Teaching Facility (MSTF) with
three bridges. The north portion contains a five
storied enclosed atrium including walkways with
connections to Howard Hall on all floors.
The south site contains a loading
dock/receiving area. The entire facility houses offices,
research laboratories, teaching areas and conference
rooms.
The building is protected
through-out with a combination standpipe/wet
pipe sprinkler system. fire department 2 1/2
inch hose valves are located in each stair landing.
and a 1000 gpm fire pump with its
attendant electrical controllers.
The three connecting bridges to MSTF are also
sprinkled. The atrium and walkways to Howard
hall are protected with perimeter sidewall sprinkler
heads designed an located to provide a "water
curtain" spray pattern on the atrium walls.
The fire department connections
are located on Redwood and Baltimore Streets. Knox
FDC caps have been installed on the fire department
connections to prevent vandalism.
Portable fire extinguisher's are located
throughout the facility.
Two enclosed fire 2 hour fire
rated stairways provide sufficient exiting capacity.
An addressable fire alarm
system consisting of manual pull stations, audible/visual
warning units, smoke, heat & duct detectors
(supervisory),
sprinkler water flow devices and valve supervisory
switches is present through-out the facility.
This system transmits a signal to the Pine Street
Police Station.
Access for persons with
disabilities is via the main entrance and then
by elevator to the upper floors.
A Knox Box has been installed next
to the fire alarm annunciator with keys for elevators, mechanical areas,
electric areas and fire alarm panels to be used by the
fire department as needed.
