The Frank C. Bressler
Research Building is a 14 storied plus basement and partial
sub-basement (mechanical/electrical room) of fire resistive
construction. The structure houses offices, research and
teaching laboratories, and two Class C Assembly lecture
halls on the 1st floor/mezzanine. The 14th floor houses
additional mechanical and fume exhausting equipment.
A fire alarm system consisting of manual pull
stations, audible/visible devices, smoke detectors,
sprinkler water flow and valve supervisory switches
transmits a signal to the Pine Street Police Station.
Fire department 2 1/2" hose connections are located
at each floor level in the three stairwells. A
fire department connection is located on Baltimore
Street at the Northeast corner of the building.
Knox FDC caps have been
installed on the fire department connection to prevent
vandalism.
The building is totally protected
with a combination standpipe/wet pipe sprinkler system.
These systems are supported by a 1000 gpm fire pump
located in the sub-basement.
Portable fire extinguisher's are
located throughout the facility.
A Fire Command Center (FCC) is located in the Ground
Floor lobby behind the stairs to the mezzanine level. The FCC contains
the following equipment:
1) Firefighter phone system with handsets.
2) Building PA System via the voice evacuation alarm system.
3) A dedicated outside telephone line not within the UMB system.
4) Main fire alarm control panel.
5) Elevator status panel.
6) Smoke control system controls.
7) Status of emergency generator annunciation display.
8) Building plans.
Firefighter telephone jacks are located
within each stairway landing and each elevator lobby.
Select corridor doors are held open by electro-magnetic
hold open devices which will release upon activation
of the building's fire alarm system. These doors
are part of the smoke barrier compartmentation for
each floor.
Three enclosed stairways provide sufficient
exit capacity. Handicapped accessibility is via the
north entrance from Baltimore Street. Fire Department
suppression equipment has access on the north, east,
and south sides.
A Knox Box has been installed next
to the fire command center with keys for elevators, mechanical areas,
electric areas and fire alarm panels to be used by the
fire department as needed.
A Key for the Knox FDC caps is
also located in the Knox Box.
This building is multi-classified as Business, Industrial,
and Assembly Occupancy. |
