Recombinant DNA Work at the University of Maryland Baltimore

All research that involves the use of recombinant DNA molecules or organisms and viruses containing recombinant DNA molecules must be registered with the Institutional Biosafety Committee.

Recombinant DNA molecules are defined by the NIH as (i) molecules that are constructed outside living cells by joining natural or synthetic DNA segments to DNA molecules that can replicate in a living cell, or (ii) molecules that result from the replication of those described in (i) above. The NIH Guidelines specify practices and containment required for the construction and handling of rDNA molecules or organisms containing rDNA molecules.
