Institutional Biosafety Committee
An IBC is required for institutions receiving funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for research involving recombinant DNA molecules. The UMB IBC provides oversight of experiments with recombinant DNA molecules and organisms and viruses containing recombinant DNA molecules; human gene transfer; and the deliberate transfer of DNA, or DNA or RNA derived from recombinant DNA, into human research participants. The IBC also reviews and approves research conducted with microorganisms pathogenic to humans, plants, or animals as well as research using select agents. If your research involves the use of recombinant DNA molecules, human blood/tissue, pathogens or potentially pathogenic material, you must register your project with the IBC. The IBC will review your submission and advise you of its findings.
