Chemical Waste

Definition: Nonradioactive materials and waste contaminated with hazardous chemicals. Examples: Waste and open surplus chemicals, Antineoplastic agents and other prescription drugs (uncontrolled substance), Broken thermometers and other materials containing mercury, pesticides, nonreturnable gas cylinders and lecture bottles, nonradioactive lead shielding and lead scrap, photographic film processing solutions, spent solvents, residue of spill materials, batteries, contaminated or used pump and/or mineral oil.


Packaging guidelines:

General Instructions:

  1. Call 6-6281 to receive a hazardous chemical removal request form or click here to submit online.
  2. Complete the form according to the instructions.
  3. Send completed form to EHS by campus mail or FAX (6-8212)
If Discarding:

Chemicals in original container:

Confirm Identity of chemical.

Chemicals in containers other than the original container:

  1. Mark XXXXX through original label.
  2. Complete and attach a new label.

Flammable solvents and aqueous mixtures containing flammable solvents:

  1. Segregate halogenated solvents.
  2. Do not mix contaminated solvents with aqueous solvent mixtures.

Chemically contaminated solid waste:

  1. Line a cardboard box or other appropriate container with a clear plastic bag. No Autoclave bags or infectious waste bags are accepted.
  2. Place waste in bag.
  3. Twist bag at the top, bend twisted portion to form loop and seal loop with tape.
  4. Affix label identifying contents to the box.
Special instructions:
  1. Waste chemicals should not be discarded as General Waste or as BPMW and should not be poured down sink drains.
  2. Do not place heavy metal compounds, oxidizers, phenols, strong acids or bases in the solvent container.
  3. Retain the chemicals in the laboratory awaiting pick-up. Do not place waste in corridors.
