Special Conditions for the Use of Potentially Volatile Radioactive Material

The following special conditions apply to each Authorization issued by the University of Maryland Radiation Safety Committee where 1 mCi or more of potentially volatile I-125 or 1 Ci or more of H-3 in unsealed form may be utilized. Failure to fully comply with these Terms and Conditions or the Maryland's Regulations for Control of Ionizing Radiation may result in the immediate suspension, modification or revocation of the authorization. These conditions are in addition to, and not in substitution for, other applicable conditions of the authorization.

  1. The Authorized User, or an authorized designee, shall complete and submit The Central Iodination Facility Registration Form at least 24 hours prior to using 1 mCi or more of I-125 or 1 Ci or more of H-3 with the following information:

  2. Five Digit Authorization Number
  3. Authorized User’s First and Last Name
  4. The proposed date and time of use
  5. Isotope and activity
  6. Name and phone number of the individual that will be involved in the use

NOTE: The Central Iodination Facility Registration Form can be completed and submitted via the web at www.ehs.umaryland.edu.

  1. The Authorized User, or an authorized designee, shall ensure that a control number is obtained from the Radiation Safety Division (RSD) prior to ordering the isotope and that the vendor is instructed to deliver the package to Environmental Health and Safety, 714 West Lombard Street, Room 111, Baltimore, MD 21201. RSD will then deliver the radioactive material to room 331A on the day of the procedure.
  2. The Authorized User, or an authorized designee, shall ensure that the protocol employing the use of either 1 mCi or greater of I-125 or 1 Ci or greater of H-3 was submitted and approved by the Radiation Safety Committee.
  3. The Authorized User, or an authorized designee, shall be physically present during each procedure to ensure that all safety precautions are observed and all special conditions are followed.
  4. All procedures shall only be conducted with the prior approval and in the physical presence of a member of the Radiation Safety Division staff in the Central Iodination Facility, Room 331A Howard Hall.
  5. The Radiation Safety Division shall ensure that a suitable, properly calibrated and operating survey meter is on hand for each use of 1 mCi or more of radioiodine.
  6. The Radiation Safety Division shall ensure that each individual involved in the use of 1 mCi or more of radioiodine is immediately surveyed for personal contamination including lab coat(s) and clothing. Any contaminated personal belongings shall be immediately isolated.
  7. The Radiation Safety Division shall conduct an adequate survey, for removable contamination and decontaminate if necessary, immediately after each procedure.
  8. The Radiation Safety Division shall arrange for a prompt removal of the waste generated, and keep all container(s), including any waste, in suitably trapped and tightly sealed containers.
  9. The Authorized User, or an authorized designee, shall ensure that all individuals involved in each procedure participate in the current bioassay program administered by the Radiation Safety Division.
  10. Unused potentially volatile Iodine in quantities of 1 millicurie or more will be returned to the Radiation Safety Division after the procedure for disposal.
