YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW...
AND RECEIVE TRAINING!
Federal
and Maryland regulations state that employees have a right
to know about potential hazards in the workplace. Employees
must also receive appropriate training on how to identify
these hazards and work safely with them. At the University,
it is common for employees to be exposed to hazardous chemicals,
ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, human bloodborne pathogens,
and laboratory animals. The Office of Environmental Health
and Safety (EHS) provides information, regularly scheduled
training, and consultation on all matters affecting your
safety and health while employed at this institution. This
web site is your first resource for safety and health information. As soon as you start your job, your supervisor
has the responsibility to identify and discuss with you
the workplace hazards you may encounter . You have the responsibility
to attend the appropriate training sessions. Please review
the types of exposures or workplace conditions listed below
and take appropriate action. EHS offers training sessions
throughout the year. Call 410-706-7055 for more information.
Laboratory personnel normally need to attend Bloodborne Pathogens, Use of Hazardous Chemicals in the Laboratory, and Hazardous Waste Training.
Persons using radioactive material must
complete a Radiation Safety
Course of instruction consisting of two parts: Fundamentals
Radiation Concepts and Applied Radiation Safety Practices.
Persons who do not handle radioactive material, but who
may frequent areas where it is used are welcome to attend.
Anyone working with laboratory animals should
read the
Occupational Health Program
for Personnel with Substantial Laboratory Animal Contact and Animal Worker Safety Program.
The Occupational Health Program discusses risks associated with the laboratory
animal environment such as bites, allergens, zoonotic diseases,
and hazardous agents. Precautions and recommendations for
protection against these risks are discussed. The Animal Worker Safety Program covers the safety programs that the University has in place to protect employees that work with research animals. Generators of hazardous waste or persons
who have an occupational exposure to hazardous waste must
attend Hazardous Waste
Training. This course addresses how to perform duties
in a manner that ensures the facilitys compliance
with regulations and how to respond to emergencies involving
hazardous waste. This
course is required annually.
Personnel who are responsible for the packaging
and shipping of potentially infectious materials must
attend DOT Infectious and Biological Material Shipping . This course
covers Department of Transportation, International Air
Transport Association, and Center for Disease Control
regulations as they pertain to infectious material shipments
