Human Materials
Many activities on campus in both research laboratories and clinical space involve the manipulation of human blood, tissue, or cell culture. The use of material of human origin must be registered with the Institutional Biosafety Committee. All employees that have the potential exposure to human materials are at risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens (BBP). The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set guidelines that must be complied with where there is potential occupational exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens .
All employees should also be apprised of the hazards of working with human materials and are required to take Bloodborne Pathogens training offered by EHS. Employers are required to offer all employees with potential exposure the Hepatitis B vaccine. This vaccine is offered free to employees through Student & Employee Health (SEH) . Those who decline to receive the Hepatitis B vaccine must sign a declination form to be sent to Student Employee Health.
